Biography: Rombout Verhulst moved to Amsterdam in 1646 where he began working under Flemish sculptor Artus Quellinus. After Quellinus left for Antwerp, Verhulst became the Netherlands’s most prominent sculptor. He moved to Leiden and then The Hague, working for a small group of leading citizens. He produced portrait busts and effigies in a naturalistic sense that was different from the classical style of his colleagues.
