Nationality: French
Movement: Barbizon School

Biography:
Theodore Rousseau developed an appreciation for the French countryside early in his life, and after a brief employment at sawmill, began painting landscapes. His influence came from naturalist painters, Ruisdael and Constable. In the late 1840’s, Rousseau had founded the Barbizon School named after his favorite region and landscape subject, and that included other artists such as Corot, Daubigny, Diaz, and Millet. Rousseau’s work became well known and sought after in the 1850’s. However, he preferred to remain in his cottage in Barbizon, where he died in 1867.
