Biography: Jean-Etienne Liotard trained as a miniature painter in Geneva before studying in the workshop of a leading Parisian painter. Rejected by the Academie Royale, he went to Italy and completed many portrait commissions and then traveled throughout the Mediterranean region, finally settling in Constantinople. He stayed there for four years painting portraits of the British colony there. Liotard then traveled across Europe painting pastel portraits. He published a treatise on painting at the age of seventy-nine.
