Biography:
Nicolas Lancret was trained as an engraver first before he apprenticed to a history painter. Beginning in 1708, he studied at the Academie Royale but was later expelled for bad behavior. Lancret then entered the workshop of Claude Gillot. He joined the Academie Royale in 1719 and achieved large commercial success after Watteau and Gillot’s death.
