Biography:
After studying in Rotterdam, William Kalf settled in Amsterdam and lived there for the rest of his life. He received little recognition for his work and did not sell many of his paintings. He primarily painted still-lifes with unique figures and compositions. He was a master of bold color and extensive, realistic detail. Kalf was believed to have painted under the influence of fellow bourgeoisie Dutch artist, Jan Vermeer. Kalf’s reputation as an influential artist developed when his work was restored in the twentieth century.
