Biography:
Abraham Janssen spent the majority of his career in Antwerp except for visits to Rome in 1598 and 1601. After his second visit to Italy, he was painting in the Mannerist tradition. However, in 1610, Janssen began painting in a classical style reminiscent of Caravaggio. He was a major painter in Flanders until the 1620’s, when his work came under the influence of Peter Paul Rubens.
