Biography: American born, Thomas Eakins studied anatomy at Jefferson Medical College and painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He then moved to Paris to learn under J.L. Gérôme and Leon Bonnat at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He returned to Philadelphia in 1870, set up a studio, and became an anatomy professor at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He primarily painted portraits, some genre scenes, and worked in sculpture as well.
