Biography:
Born in Mechelen, the capital of the southern Netherlands, Frans Crabbe van Espleghem began his career painting altarpieces. Crabbe began experimenting with printmaking after a visit from Albrecht Durer in 1521. Crabbe acquired a workshop in 1539 and became one of the Netherlands’s first etchers. He also worked as an engraver and woodcutter.
