Biography:
The first African American professional artist in California, Grafton Brown Tyler was originally a draughtsmen and lithographer for Kuchel & Dressel in San Franciso. He began his own company in 1867 and continued making lithographs of buildings and landmarks. Brown lived in Portland, Oregon for five years and then moved to St. Paul Minnesota where he worked as a draughtsman for the United States Army Engineers until his death in 1918.
